(Don’t) Ask Your Agent

I am an excellent insurance agent, trust me. I can answer most insurance questions that people ask me. I am trained to do so and I go to classes all the time to catch up and remain informed. If I do not know the answer to your question, I have resources and will get back to you with my best answer.
My question is: just when did your insurance agent become a surrogate for your attorney, your CPA and your contractor? I find myself being asked all kinds of questions that might be better suited for another professional.
I get asked legal questions every day. I get asked whether it is better to have an LLC or an “S” Corporation. I get asked what do about a leaky roof, or what the best type of wiring is to have inside a house.
I admit that I am smart, and I might have a layman’s opinion on the matter, but you should really call another professional rather than your insurance agent when you have a legal or accounting question. I think the problem is that when you call your lawyer or CPA the meter starts ticking and you are going to get a bill if you ask them any questions. Your insurance agent does not charge when you call with a question.
Here is a short list of some of the questions I’ve been asked:
- Can I sue someone for making too much noise?
- Can I write my clothing off on my taxes?
- What is the optimal temperature to keep my house at?
- What is a good temperature to cook meat at?
The moral of the story is that unless you have a question related to insurance coverage, your best bet is to seek advice from a professional best-suited for your question.
